Background on Riyadh School Holiday Planning
Historically, Riyadh’s school holiday schedule has been aligned with national religious and public holidays, with summer breaks typically lasting around two months. The Saudi Ministry of Education regularly updates the academic calendar ahead of each school year, considering religious lunar calendar adjustments and regional planning needs. The 2025-2026 schedule was announced in late 2024, with the current 2026-2027 schedule now confirmed, marking a pattern of early planning.
Interest in the holiday schedule has increased recently due to regional economic developments and the growth of domestic tourism. Families and businesses are seeking certainty to optimize travel and operational planning. The announcement comes amid broader efforts by Saudi authorities to enhance the stability and attractiveness of the education system, especially as the country invests heavily in tourism and infrastructure projects.
It is worth noting that the specific dates for religious holidays like Eid are traditionally based on lunar observations, which can vary slightly each year. The government typically announces the final dates closer to the holidays, but the general periods are widely anticipated based on lunar calendar estimates.
Remaining Details on Religious Holiday Dates
While the overall holiday periods are confirmed, the exact dates for Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha remain uncertain until lunar observations are completed. These dates are traditionally announced a few days before the holidays and may vary slightly from estimates. Additionally, minor adjustments could occur based on regional moon sightings, which might influence the final holiday schedule.
Next Steps in Finalizing the 2026-2027 Calendar
The Saudi Ministry of Education and lunar observation authorities will coordinate to confirm the precise dates for religious holidays closer to their expected periods, likely in late April or early May 2026 for Eid al-Fitr, and mid to late June 2027 for Eid al-Adha. Schools and parents should monitor official announcements for updates. The final calendar will be published officially once all dates are confirmed, allowing comprehensive planning for the upcoming academic year.
